\nIn our next sutta course\, we are going to cover the sutta “The Removal of Distracting Thoughts” (MN 20: Vitakkasanthana Sutta). The title of the sutta in the Chinese Agama is “Discourse on the Higher Mind” which Bhikku Bodhi regards as a more appropriate translation (somewhat ironically since Bhikku Bodhi’s own translation is “The Removal of Distracting Thoughts”). The higher mind (adhicitta) is the mind of samadhi\, a mind of deep concentration. The sutta describes five very specifi c and practical ways to help develop the higher mind by removing unwholeso me thoughts. So if you are interested in developing deeper levels of conce ntration\, this sutta is for you. \nThose familiar with the Buddhist tradition will be aware that The Four Noble Truths and The N oble Eightfold Path are considered fundamental to the study and practice o f Buddhism. They are common to all Buddhist schools.
\nThere are two key aspects to this course. One i s that we directly study selected suttas from the Nikayas of the Pali cano n\; in other words\, we learn about the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Ei ghtfold Path directly from the Buddha himself\, or in some cases from his closest disciples. The other is the emphasis on practice. Our goal is not just learning the eight factors of the path but to walk the path in our li ved experience.
\nWe expect that the entire course will take more than a year as we study multiple sut tas selected from the Nikayas of the Pali canon. While those with a seriou s commitment are welcome to join us for the entire journey\, you can also join for those suttas that are of specific interest to you.
\nThe suttas have been selected based larg ely on the suttas listed by Bhikku Bodhi in his books\, “In the Buddha’s W ords” and “Reading the Buddha’s Discourses in Pali” and on those in Andrew Olendzki’s Integrated Dharma Program.
\nEach course session will include reading the discourses\; exp loring the text in detail\; doing practical meditations and exercises\; an d group discussions. All necessary course materials will be provided.
